Sobierajski Earns MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors

Siena Women’s Soccer junior back Tara Sobierajski is the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week. The Rockaway, NJ native is the first non-goalkeeper to earn the honor this season.

Sobierajski scored the decisive goal and anchored a Siena defense which stymied a potent Marist attack in the Saints’ lone match last week, a key 1-0 victory over the rival Red Foxes.

The center back quarterbacked a Siena back line which held the MAAC contenders Marist – which had entered play with a 5-2 conference mark – without a shot over the first 67 minutes of action. Marist came into the match averaging 1.5 goals per game while ranking third in the MAAC at that time averaging 15.4 shots per contest.

Thanks in large part to Sobierajski’s play, the Saints held an opponent to six shots or fewer for the sixth time this year, while also recording the team’s seventh shutout to mark the program’s most in seven years.

One of the MAAC’s premier two-way center backs and set piece takers, Sobierajski also scored the game-winning goal. On a corner kick from the right in the 24th minute, she bent in a perfect attempt which curled its way through traffic untouched inside the near right post. It marked the fourth career game-winning goal for Sobierajski who has started all 58 of Siena’s matches over her first three seasons and played all but three minutes. Sobierajski has tallied nine points this fall and currently ranks tied for eighth in the MAAC with five assists.

Sobierajski and the Saints conclude regular season action Wednesday with a 2 p.m. kickoff at Quinnipiac. Siena would clinch a MAAC Tournament berth with a win.
