SiCM’S 11th Annual “Harvest for the Pantry”

Schenectady Community Ministries is holding its 11th Annual fundraising dinner event to benefit the emergency food pantry. On Sunday, October 28, “Harvest for the Pantry” will take place from 2-5pm at First Reformed Church of Scotia, 224 North Ballston Avenue. The event will feature a homemade dinner, pick-a-prize activity, and brand new this year, the Can-Can Can-Do Sculpture Competition. Dinner choices include chicken/beef or vegetarian options—all are gluten-free. Tickets are available for purchase through Eventbrite as well as at the SiCM Office; located at 1055 Wendell Avenue, Schenectady, for $35 each. Honorary committee levels range from $100 to $1,000.

The Can-Can Can-Do Sculpture Competition will take place throughout the event. Groups will collect canned goods, which will later be given to our food pantry, and build a sculpture of their choice. Guests will be able to vote on their favorite sculpture and the winners will go home with the coveted Golden Can Award. This is a great way to build teamwork skills, have fun, and learn about SiCM, all while supporting our pantry. Groups can sign up by contacting Jo-Anne Rafalik at the SiCM Office; 518-374-2683 x 108.

The SiCM pantry is the largest pantry in the Schenectady area, providing over 60% of the temporary and emergency food given out to people in need in our community. The food pantry also offers “wrap around” support services, such as assistance with SNAP (Food Stamp) benefits, nutrition education, and information on health insurance and employment. The effects of the economy have led to dramatic increases in the number of households needing food assistance

The SiCM Food Program is supported by many, including the NYS Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program; Reformed Church World Service; Stewart’s; WGY Christmas Wish, the GE Foundation; Emergency Food and Shelter; Concerned for the Hungry; CROP Walk and many congregations, individuals, corporations, and civic groups.
