Shaker Heritage Society Recruiting New Board Members

Shaker Heritage Society is recruiting new Board Members to help us achieve our mission to strengthen our community through educational programs and historic preservation focused on the Shaker ideals of sustainability, equality, cooperation, and the pursuit of a meaningful life.

This is an opportunity to help preserve a significant historic site that also is a bucolic property adjacent to Albany International Airport. At SHS, every Board Member can have an impact. We are seeking new Directors with diverse backgrounds who can devote an average of at least five hours per month to SHS projects.

Some of the Society’s current projects include:

  • Implementation of an award winning Site Master Plan that calls for the preservation of nine nationally significant historic buildings and the surrounding landscape.
  • Working with Albany County (which owns the site) to implement a one million dollar economic development grant for capital improvements.
  • Partnerships with the local businesses, and colleges to develop and promote education programs and special events.
  • We are part of a collaboration between eleven cultural organizations who are working together to promote heritage tourism in Albany.
  • Popular annual Craft Fairs that help sustain over 100 local small craft businesses.
  • K-12 education programs and special programs for seniors and people experiencing memory loss
