Self Advocate Megan Bomgaars @ Capital Region Buddy Walk

Megan Bomgaars, a popular self advocate with Down syndrome and a cast member on A&E’s “Born This Way,” will make an inspirational keynote address at the 21st Annual Capital Region Buddy Walk on Saturday, October 14, at Schenectady Central Park. Bomgaars will speak to the crowd just before the walk begins and will serve as its Grand Marshal. The Buddy Walk celebration is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is a fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center, a division of the Center for Disability Services.

In addition to her work on the cable television show, Bomgaars is an artist and entrepreneur who lives by the motto, “don’t limit me.” Her life experiences and beliefs about being fully included in the community make her a sought after speaker and an inspiration to many individuals with Down syndrome and their family members. Known for her personal style, Bomgaars paints, journals, sings and has an online company, Megology, which sells unique, handmade textiles which she creates using various dyeing techniques.

The Capital Region Buddy Walk is a one mile trek open to participants of all ages and abilities. The event was established as a way to recognize the achievements of individuals with Down syndrome. Family friendly activities round out the day and include a magician, animals, food, music, fitness demonstrations and crafts.

Nationally, the Buddy Walk began in 1995 to promote the community inclusion and acceptance of people with Down syndrome. The Capital Region Buddy Walk was introduced in 1996 and is one of 250 held across the country.
