Schenectady and Me Project

In 2017, a group of art lovers and Schenectady lovers (called Schenectady Creative Arts Network or SCAN) got together to create a community based art endeavor to help bring neighborhoods together and lay the groundwork for permanent, outdoor, public sculptures in our city. We’re pleased to announce that the New York State Arts Council has funded the “Schenectady and Me” project to bring professional artists to festivals and outdoor events to help participants create small, two-dimensional compositions depicting places and events from their neighborhoods. These artists will help participants of all ages overcome any fears of creating artwork. They will guide them in the use of materials and in the basic principles of art and design. Many of these works will be reproduced on ceramic tiles.

We need your help to make this project blossom by featuring the finished compositions at exhibits at several venues throughout Schenectady this fall and in the winter of 2019. At these exhibitions, participants will celebrate their artwork and see how their work can become part of a more inclusive permanent piece of outdoor art.

We hope you share our belief that creating art together encourages people to share ideas, build social networks, solve problems, and even create pathways for healthy neighborhoods. This project invites the public to participate in a collaborative art project, which will lead to the creation of outdoor public art pieces in Schenectady’s various neighborhoods.
