Salvation Army Donut Day Offers Donuts to Veterans

DonutDAy-FB-2016 (2)The Albany Salvation Army will be celebrating National Donut Day on Friday, June 3 by distributing doughnuts to veterans at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center and Fischer House and later at Capital Park (State Street side).  The Salvation Army mobile feeding unit will be parked in front of the VA Medical Center starting at 9:30 a.m.  Later that morning at 11:30 a.m., they will be parked at Capital Park handing out doughnuts.

“It’s a perfect way to honor veterans with a donut. The Salvation Army founded National Donut Day in 1938 to pay tribute to “Donut Lassies,” female volunteers, who provided writing supplies, clothes-mending, home-cooked meals, and of course, donuts, for soldiers on the front lines in World War I,” said Major Roger Duperree, executive director of the Capital Region Salvation Army.

The doughnuts became synonymous with The Salvation Army, as well as the American soldiers who were returning home with the nickname, “doughboys.” This occasion established the donut as a long-standing symbol of the services The Salvation Army continues to provide. Today, The Salvation Army continues to provide meals, including doughnuts, and numerous other services to clients who visit The Salvation Army programs daily.

In the past year, throughout the Capital Region, the Army has provided over 250,000 meals to the hungry, offers tutoring, summer, and after school youth activities, basic needs assistance, help in times of disasters, rehabilitation for those with addictions, and shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence.

“The Salvation Army brings hope to those in need,” said Major Duperree.

Salvation Army Worship and Community Centers are located in Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Glens Falls, Plattsburgh, Oneonta, Gloversville, and the Hudson Service Center.
