Sage Awarded $2 million CSTEP Grant from NYS Education Department

Grant will support minority and economically disadvantaged students

ALBANY & TROY, NY – The Sage Colleges is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) grant from the New York State Education Department. Sage will receive a total of $2 million over a period of 5 years, roughly $400,000 annually. More than 250 students are expected to benefit from the program each year.

The grant funding will support Russell Sage, Sage College of Albany and School of Professional and Continuing Education students who are underrepresented minority students or students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds seeking a degree in a STEM discipline or pursuing a licensed health profession. Eligible STEM disciplines include biology, chemistry, computer science biochemistry, forensic science, nursing, nutrition, math, or math engineering.  Support is also available to eligible students in any academic program who are taking coursework that will allow them to seek admission to graduate-level professional programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, or medical, dental, or optometry programs.

“We are excited to launch this vital program which will further enhance the academic support, experiential learning, and mentoring that Sage provides to underrepresented minority and economically disadvantaged students to help them to achieve their goal of earning a degree in these disciplines,” said Donna Heald, associate provost of The Sage Colleges. “CSTEP participants are eligible to receive financial support for summer undergraduate research, travel funds to present their research at conferences, and stipends to defray the cost of licensing or MCAT exam preparation materials. We are seeing a growing demand for workers who are skilled in STEM and related fields. This is a win-win for our students seeking an education in these areas and for employers who need skilled workers. These students will leave Sage with a valuable education that has prepared them for a job in a high demand sector of the workforce.”
