Sage Announces Opalka Family Scholarship Recipients

Opalka_Scholarship_1The Sage Colleges is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the Opalka Family Scholarships. The scholarships were established by Chester and Karen Opalka and their family to recognize students from Averill Park High School in pursuit of either an undergraduate degree in an educational field at Russell Sage College or an art degree at Sage College of Albany. Chester Opalka is a former trustee of The Sage Colleges and a co-founder of Albany Molecular Research, Inc. (AMRI). Chester and Karen are donors to the Opalka Gallery on the Sage College of Albany campus which is named in their family’s honor.

Two additional scholarships are awarded each year. The Russell Sage College (RSC) scholarship is an annual award of $5,000 and Sage College of Albany (SCA) scholarship is $3,000 annually. Scholarships are renewable for subsequent years provided the student remains in good academic standing and continues enrollment as a full-time student in the appropriate academic program. To qualify the student must be a well-rounded individual who has demonstrated financial need and earned a minimum of an 80 GPA through high school and a minimum combined SAT score of 1000 for RSC and 850 for SCA. The student must also demonstrate involvement in community service and extra-curricular activities.

This year’s recipients are as follows:
Gina Capece, Sage College of Albany sophomore in the Graphic and Media Design program
Katielynn Canavan, Sage College of Albany junior in the Graphic and Media Design program
Kylee Mueller, Russell Sage College sophomore in the Childhood Education program
James W. Carpentier, Sage College of Albany freshman in the Graphic and Media Design program

Former Scholarship recipients and Sage alumni have gone on to successful careers with General Electric, the New York State Department of Health, the Lake Ridge Group and Blizzard Entertainment to name a few.
