Renowned Arm Of The Sea Theater brings kid-friendly “DIRT” to HVCC

Arm of the Sea Theater presents “DIRT – The Secret Life of Soil,” the newest of its live mask and puppet productions, on Saturday, May 6 at Hudson Valley Community College. The noon performance, open free of charge to the public, is in the Maureen Stapleton Theatre at 80 Vandenburgh Ave. in Troy.

“DIRT” is a theatrical experience for all ages that combines over-sized masks and puppet characters (12” to 12’ tall!), visual storytelling and live music in a fun-filled tale about the secret life of soil. Where does food “come from” and from what is it made? Fusing cutting-edge science and age-old puppetry, “DIRT” takes audiences on an extravagant journey of discovery into the Great Underneath to reveal the epic alchemy of plants, the fungi’s dance of mutual delight, and the microbes’ herculean labors, reminding mere mortals just how important soil is to survival.

Arm Of The Sea Theater tours extensively throughout the northeast with its original, award-winning productions that often illustrate the precarious bond between humans and their environment. The touring company presents an average of 75 performances each year at arts centers, festivals, schools and special events, and also conducts theater arts residencies and hosts an annual summer performance event, the Esopus Creek Puppet Suite, at its home base in Saugerties, NY. Arm of the Sea was founded in 1982 by Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden, whose vision is shaped today by the talents of composers/musicians Dean Jones, Dennis Yerry, Juan Basilio Sanchez and Thomas Workman, designer Jean Whelan and performers Carl Welden, Cathy Muller, Leeanne Richards, Zoe Rowan and Eli McNamara.

The Arm Of The Sea performance at Hudson Valley is presented by the Cultural Affairs Program; visit http://www.hvcc.edu/culture/ or call (518) 629-8071.
