Regional Food Bank Creates New Program to Serve Seniors

A large number of our neighbors live paycheck to paycheck — or in many cases, on a fixed income. When you add in the high prices we continue to see for groceries, you can understand how hard it may be to afford food once the bills are paid. This is especially true for seniors, and that puts them at higher risk of hunger.

Under-resourced seniors without their own transportation face a unique barrier to accessing fresh food. In partnership with low-income senior housing sites, the Food Bank’s Senior Food Delivery Program provides free food to low-income seniors at their housing facilities on a monthly basis. Product is delivered by the Food Bank and distributed in community rooms where seniors choose from a variety of fresh produce, dairy, and other nutritious items.

Last year, we created a new program division that specifically focuses on senior hunger with a dedicated staff member. 2,736 seniors participated in the program across more than 50 senior housing sites in 2024. We look forward to expanding the program in 2025 to assist more seniors.
