Questar III BOCES New Visions Medical Students Place First and Third in Case Competition

Recently, the Questar III BOCES New Visions: Medical students participated in a Case Competition offered by the Mentorship through Case Discussion Learning Activity with the Upstate Medical University Rural Medical Scholars Program.

Learning modules were created for the competition and delivered by a team of medical students from the Rural Medical Scholars Program with the goal of each team demonstrating their understanding of the learning materials through the competition, focused on a clinical case: Lyme disease.

Topics from the competition included patient interview and exam skills, risk factors for Lyme disease, and social determinants of health, related to Lyme disease. The competition was also an opportunity for New Vision students to work with a team of first-year medical student mentors. The mentors delivered lectures related to the case, held virtual office hours to answer questions, and helped the students prepare for the competition.

Seven teams from four BOCES locations across the state competed in the competition, with Questar III BOCES teams taking first and third place.

The first-place Red Team was made up of Vivian Bull of Lansingburgh Central School District, Sarai Chung and Victoria Steils of Hudson City School District, Violet Dupuis and Simone Schwarz-Eise of Averill Park Central School District, and Iyannah Rivers of Troy City School District,

The third-place Blue Team was made up of Zareena Ansari of Averill Park Central School District, Naia Bourdeau and Zi’ana Lewis of Lansingburgh Central School District, Emma McGlynn of Taconic Hills Central School District, and Dylan O’Bryan of Coxsackie-Athens Central School District.

Questar III BOCES New Vision: Medical teams were supported by Ariana Dingley of Lansingburgh Central School District, Ruby Greco and Annalese Short of Troy City School District, Devin Fitzmaurice and Ian Fitzmaurice of Catskill Central School District, and Kiera Rasmussen of Hoosic Valley Central School District.

The New Visions: Medical program is an honor-level, seniors-only program based at Samaritan Hospital in Troy for students who are interested in learning about careers in the medical field before heading off to college. This program is designed to allow students to explore a wide variety of careers and specialty areas in the medical field through firsthand experience and related college coursework.
