Preferred Mutual and Marshall & Sterling Co-host Child Car Seat Inspection Event

On Saturday, May 6, Preferred Mutual Insurance Company and Marshall & Sterling Insurance co-hosted a child car seat inspection event at Circleville Park in Circleville, New York, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members of the community were invited to have their child’s car seat inspected by a certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technician to ensure that it met current safety regulations and was properly installed.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children 14 years old and younger. However, many of these deaths can be prevented by properly installed child safety seats. NHTSA’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis “Occupant Protection in Passenger Vehicles” February 2017 report states that: “Child safety seats have been shown to reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants (under 1 year old) and by 54 percent for toddlers (1 to 4 years old) in passenger cars.”

Twenty-six inspections were completed during the three-hour event. Of those 26 inspections, 13 car seats were replaced. Parents and guardians received education about matching their child to a car seat based on age, weight and height and proper installation. All attendees were also entered into a raffle to win a Kindle Fire.
