Pickles, Minions, and Other Festivities Planned for Downtown Albany’s Food Fight

Downtown Albany’s Food Fight event boasts all day fun on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Whether coming to watch a free movie, sample pickle(d) creations, or take in a show or program, the day is full of activities suited for participants of all ages.

Saturday’s Events
11:00 a.m.| Despicable Me | Palace Theatre | FREE Event
Minions take over Downtown – well, the Palace Theatre anyway. Free tickets are available in advance at both the Downtown Albany BID office (21 Lodge Street | Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and at the Palace Theatre Box Office (M-F 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sat 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Free tickets will also be available the day of the event at the Palace until the theatre reaches capacity.

11:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. | Haunted Albany Tales | Henry Hudson Planetarium
Unearth Albany’s past this Halloween season with haunted tales inspired by the City’s wicked history. Huddle under the twinkling lights in the Henry Hudson Planetarium as a storyteller weaves tales of the strange and supernatural. Discover thousand year old stories in the night sky, passed down through generations. Cider and donuts will also be served. Tickets are $3 per person. Learn more.

MAIN EVENT >> Noon to 3:00 p.m. | Food Fight – Pickle(d) Edition
Come walk the historic streets of Downtown, taste the pickle(d) creations from different businesses, and help determine which serves up the best portion. During the event, vendors will sell prepared portions to the public for $1.00. Participants will be encouraged to patronize multiple vendors to be eligible to vote for a People’s Choice winner with ballot boxes at the Downtown Albany BID table (“Pickle(d)” Headquarters) at 40 N Pearl Street. Vendors are not limited to variations of the traditional cucumber pickle during this event; portion examples include Chicken and Veggie Tacos with Pickled Slaw from The Hollow Bar + Kitchen, and Pickled Cucumber Salad from Maurice’s Delicatessen. Food Fight will be held rain or shine.

To date, the 16 participating restaurants and pubs include: Ama Cocina, The Barrel Saloon & Texas BBQ, The Capital Eatery & Lounge, Charter (Hilton Albany), Cider Belly Doughnuts, The City Beer Hall, Dali Mamma, Dawn’s Victory Sports Cafe, The Hollow Bar + Kitchen, Jack’s Oyster House, Maurice’s Pearl Street Delicatessen, The Merry Monk, Olde English Pub, Pearl Street Pub, Public House 42, and Yono’s | dp’s.

3:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m.| 4000 Miles | Capital Repertory Theatre

3:00 p.m.| Local Yocal | City Beer Hall
Local Yocal: A day of food, beer and music. Featuring all local products, this event will feature local beer, spirits, cider, food, live music, live artists, local artist installations and most importantly, you the local people. Learn more.

7:00 p.m.| Nancy Kerrigan’s Halloween on Ice | Times Union Center
Two time Olympic medalist, Nancy Kerrigan, five time World Champion, Kurt Browning, and three time U.S. national Champion, Johnny Weir, headline an all-star cast as Halloween On Ice.  See some of your all-time favorite skaters perform in costumes to Halloween themed music in a newly created show for the whole family! 8:00 p.m.| Wanda Sykes | Palace Theatre
Wanda Sykes has been called “one of the funniest stand-up comics” by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Funniest People in America. Purchase tickets.

Many restaurants and retailers will also be open during the Food Fight event. A map detailing vendors will be available online and at the Food Fight | Pickle(d) Edition headquarters at 40 N Pearl Street in downtown Albany.

“The Food Fight competition that began last year is one more way the Downtown Albany BID is adding vibrancy on our streets, attracting residents, retailers and office tenants to choose this urban location,” explains Georgette Steffens, executive director, Downtown Albany Business Improvement District. “Drawing strollers, creatives and hundreds of residents, this event showcases the amazing cuisine of our Capital City and the region, as well as all the activities and amenities that are available to enjoy.”
