Pathways Students Tour HVCC

Students in an alternative school that has proven results toured the Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) on Tuesday.

Capital Region BOCES Pathways Academy teacher Michelle Culletto led students Jadea McDermott (no school given), Rocco Gigante from Niskayuna, Kameo Douglas (no school given), Chris Terry from Guilderland, and Leroy Lewis from Watervliet on a tour of the Troy campus,  where they met with admissions officers and learned of their various options for applying to and paying for college.

The tour was one of many set up for Pathways students to various colleges in the region, Culletto said.

Douglas, who is graduating in January, said he was pleased to tour HVCC.

“I don’t know what I want to do yet, but I am going to college and I am going to apply here,” Douglas said.

Located on the Albany campus of the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School, the Pathways Academy serves 26 students from 10 school districts ranging from Watervliet to Sharon Springs for the 2019-20 students. The academy offers students in grades 9 through 12 an opportunity to take all of the required classes for graduation, including making up classes they didn’t have success with earlier. At the same time, they learn employability skills, such as how to prepare for a job interview and how to effectively communicate. Classes are offered through live classroom teaching, as well as through online courses with assistance from a Pathways Academy teacher. They also meet with area business leaders and visit various businesses in the region to better understand the region’s workforce.

In its two years of operation, the school has already seen eight students graduate, some of whom went on to the workforce and others who went on to graduate.
