Paid Sick Leave $$$

This week, the Albany County Legislature’s Law Committee and Audit & Finance Committee will be considering a proposal that would require employers ( both for-profit and non-profit) to provide paid sick leave to their employees (both full-time or part-time). This proposal if enacted would place a tremendous burden on employers, as well as Albany County consumers and taxpayers. The Legislature will also hold a public hearing on this proposal in late October. We will inform our members of the exact date, time and place in the near future. We hope that many of you will join us in voicing your opposition at this hearing.

The Chamber is not against paid sick leave. We know that most of our local employers already provide paid leave. The Chamber is against government mandates that require private sector businesses and non-profits to provide paid sick leave. Decisions regarding employee benefits should be left to the employer and not ill-defined by government. Your Chamber advocacy team has been and will continue to take the lead in stopping this well-intentioned, but flawed proposal from becoming law. If you have not already done so, please take a moment and contact Albany County Legislators and the County Executive. Because of you the Chamber’s voice is strong.
