P-TECH Students Head to RPI

High School freshmen in the innovative Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) took their learning to RPI recently to learn about biotechnology and stem cells.

Students in P-TECH’s east campus at Watervliet High School conducted experiments at RPI’s Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Sciences where they learned about the different applications of stem cells that are being investigated in the many labs within the facility and then conducted an experiment.

During the experiment, students performed a series of chemical procedures to stain mesenchymal (adult) stem cells using two fluorescent dyes. When students viewed the cells under a microscope they were able to identify the nucleus and extracellular matrix thanks to the dyes, said P-TECH Principal Kurt Redman.

“It was an excellent opportunity for the students to learn not only about stem cells and research, but also practice sterile laboratory techniques that are so important in conducting research,” Redman said.
