P-TECH Students Build Skills Virtually this Summer Thanks to BOCES Business Partners

These are not skills teens typically spend their summer days thinking about, but students in the innovative Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) program recently spent time focused on the skills thanks to several BOCES business partners.

Ben Bishop of Price Chopper/Market 32, Miriam Dushane of Alaant Workforce Solutions, Ron Gibson of ADNET Technologies and Dan Fruscio of CAPCOM Federal Credit Union spoke about everything from critical thinking to collaboration and personal responsibility and analytical thinking/curiosity during an hour-long virtual presentation to P-TECH students.

“Constructive criticism is taking the personal aspect out of it. You want to make sure the person receiving that criticism is taking it in such a way as they appreciate it and want to move forward with it,” Dushane told the sophomores and juniors.

Meanwhile Fruscio spoke about professional skills like time management and communication.

“The sooner you adopt your professional skills, the better,” he said.

Fifty-one student’s returning to P-TECH for their sophomores and junior years are taking part in the five-day summer bridge program that is designed to keep them thinking about their education while also teaching them skills they can not only use when they return to school, but in the future.

P-TECH draws students from about one dozen school districts across the Capital Region.
