Campus Visit Day

Campus Visit Day is devoted to those who are beginning their college search or already accepted to enroll. Participants will learn more about the admissions/enrollment process and financial aid, plus meet current students and take a campus tour. Presented by the Admissions Office.

Thursday, Oct. 11
Alturas Duo
Noon to 1 p.m., Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium
Praised by The Washington Post as musicians of “marvelous virtuosity,” Alturas Duo is recognized as one of the most engaging ensembles performing chamber music today. Bringing together the worlds of South American folk, western classical, and contemporary music, guitarist Scott Hill and Carlos Boltes, viola and charango, perform to great acclaim throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Central and South America. In 2010, the duo received the Award for Adventurous Programming presented by Chamber Music America and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

An Evening with Local Writers
7 to 8:30 p.m., Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium
A group of local poets, fiction writers and essayists perform short readings of original work. This year’s event occurs on National Coming Out Day and will feature poet Sarah Giragosian, author of “Queer Fish,” winner of the 2014 American Poetry Journal Book Prize; fiction writer Rone Shavers, multi-genre writer of Afro-Futurism with work in the Los Angeles Reader and PANK Magazine; poet Jil Hanifan, author of “whethergirl: wind rose,” and fiction writer Richard Hartshorn, Hudson Valley Community College instructor and recipient of the 2011 Bausch Short Story Prize. Foundation Gala
6 to 11 p.m., Franklin Plaza Ballroom, 4 Fourth St., Troy
James J. Barba, president and chief executive officer of Albany Medical Center, will be honored at this black tie-optional event. Over the years, Mr. Barba has received numerous accolades and Hudson Valley Community College is pleased to be able to honor him for his support of its health sciences programs. Shawn Theodore – One Leaf Does Not a Cypress Make
Through Saturday, Oct. 20 – The Teaching Gallery, Administration Building, ground floor
Philadelphia-based artist Shawn Theodore works in photography, videography, and collage. His practice merges real and hypothesized African American experiences set within contemporary environments. Theodore attended the Tyler School of Art and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, public relations and advertising from Temple University. Gallery hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday & Monday.

Garden, a site specific installation by Thomas Lail
Ongoing – Administration Building Atrium
Garden, Hudson Valley Professor Thomas Lail’s oversized rendering of a William Morris wallpaper pattern, scales the trellis of the Administration Building’s glass atrium, reflecting on the history of glassed-in winter gardens, cultivated nature, and the dream of Utopian architectures of transparency. This long-term installation is the first in a planned series of window projects by faculty in the department of Fine Arts, Theatre Arts and Digital Media.
