The American Institute for Public Service was created in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard. The public foundation established the Jefferson Awards, a Nobel Prize for community and public service. In 1977, the Jefferson Awards embarked on a media partnership with local newspapers and television stations to highlight community service in America.
The Jefferson Awards mission is to encourage and honor individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service. The Jefferson Awards are a well respected recognition system honoring individuals who perform community and public service. The Jefferson Awards are presented at both the national and local levels.
The local level recognizes individuals who are committed to improving their communities through volunteer and community services. The honorees are ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things, often without the expectation of recognition. Every neighborhood has “unsung heroes,” volunteers who go above and beyond their expected duties. Together they make their neighborhoods and communities a better place to live.
For the past 15 years, the Times Union, St. Peter’s Health Partners & WNYT have worked together to honor volunteers in New York’s Capital Region. Join us as we look for special volunteers from 2020. COVID permitting, the finalists will be recognized at a dinner reception in April.
One of the area’s honorees will be designated to represent the Capital District at the National Awards in Washington in June 2021.
