No Bull! This Teen is Heading to a State Welding Competition Because of His Artistic Abilities

Connor Fancher loves to be creative and he loves welding. He is combining the two in his latest project that will take him to a state competition in Syracuse next week.

Fancher, of Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District, is a senior in the Welding and Metal Fabrication Program offered by Capital Region BOCES at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen.

He is finishing this week a metal bull skull sculpture he will enter into the SkillsUSA state competition on April 25 on the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

“I am enjoying making it. I like all of the creativity and creating a piece of artwork out of nothing,” said Fancher. “The creativity of welding is the most fun thing I do.”

The Cobleskill teen was inspired to create the steel sheet metal over steel rod piece of artwork by his family farm – Fancher Farms in Howe’s Cave.

“We had a cow skull lying around and I thought it would be neat to make into art work,” said Fancher.

Fancher said he is looking forward to the competition next Thursday and meeting students into the same things he is.

“I want to see how my work does and what other sculptures have been made,” said Fancher, who will attend SUNY Delhi next year for welding.
