September 5, 2018New Provost and Undergraduate Deans at the Sage Colleges
Theresa Hand, OTD, OTR/L, CHT, has been named interim provost at The Sage Colleges. She was most recently associate provost. As the acting chief academic officer at Sage, Hand will work closely with President of The Sage Colleges Christopher Ames on strategic planning and institutional leadership. She will oversee the registrar and academic departments and the programs and services that support them, and guide curriculum design, program development and assessment and academic policy.
Professor of Mathematics Deborah Lawrence, Ph.D., who has served as dean of Russell Sage College since 2015, has been appointed undergraduate dean at The Sage Colleges. In this role, she will provide academic leadership and a vision for the future of Russell Sage College for women in Troy, N.Y., and the coeducational Sage College of Albany in Albany, N.Y.
Stacie Kutz, Ph.D., associate professor of applied biology, and Tonya Moutray, Ph.D., associate professor of English, have been named associate deans. Lawrence, Kutz and Moutray will work to promote innovative teaching methods, civic engagement, diverse educational programming and research opportunities in the undergraduate curriculum at The Sage Colleges. They will advocate for faculty professional development and advancement and collaborate with the Office of Student Life to ensure a culturally and intellectually enriching student-centered environment on both Sage campuses.
Hand was named associate provost in 2017 and previously served as dean of Sage’s School of Health Sciences. A faculty member since 1993, she has served as chair and program director of the Occupational Therapy program and held leadership roles in health care organizations. Hand holds a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of New Hampshire, a master’s degree in Health Services Administration from The Sage Colleges and a doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Creighton University.
Lawrence taught at Clarion University of Pennsylvania before she joined Sage in 1994 as assistant professor of mathematics. As a faculty member, Lawrence served on or chaired a variety of committees, including Faculty Development, Program Review, Admission and Academic Standards. She was founding co-director of Sage’s Center for Teaching and Learning, and with Associate Professor of Mathematics Tina Mancuso, secured nearly $1 million in grants to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs and scholarship funding at Sage. She was promoted to associate professor in 2000 and professor and dean of Russell Sage College in 2015. Lawrence graduated from Russell Sage College as valedictorian with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and earned her master’s and doctorate degrees from The State University of New York at Albany in the area of dynamical systems.
Kutz joined the faculty at Sage in 2005. She is Biology program director at Sage College of Albany and has also conducted significant research into cancer and wound repair mechanisms at Albany Medical Center. Kutz holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Marist College and a master’s degree and doctorate in Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics from Albany Medical College.
Moutray joined the faculty at Sage in 2006. She is the director of the Honors program at Russell Sage College, and has served as chair of the Department of Arts and Letters and English program director. Under her leadership, enrollment in the Honors program has grown three-fold, diverse interdisciplinary Honors courses have been developed, and Honors students have presented their research nationally. Moutray holds a bachelor’s degree from Loma Linda University, a master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Nebraska and a doctorate in English Literature from the University of Connecticut.
