New Equipment Bolsters Capital Region BOCES Program

Capital Region BOCES heavy equipment/commercial construction students can really dig the latest equipment the school is providing them to learn with.

A 2018 CAT 430F2 backhoe was delivered to the Schoharie Career and Technical School campus on Thursday, the latest piece of heavy equipment added to a cadre of more than a dozen dozers, dump trucks, backhoes and other tools of the construction trade.

Students in the two-year program learn the knowledge and skills to enter construction industry or pursue further education in college or technical school. They learn everything from equipment operator and maintenance skills to how to construct a building. The students can earn National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certifications, which are recognized nationwide by contractors and employers.

A panel of industry experts, business leaders and educators guide the program and make recommendations on equipment purchases, curriculum and other topics to ensure program graduates are on track for a career in the industry or to further their education at the college level.

There are currently more than 40 students from Schoharie, Schenectady and Albany counties enrolled in the program.
