“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” at the Theatre Institute at Sage

The Theatre Institute at Sage presents I Never Saw Another Butterfly, by Celeste Raspanti and directed by Leigh Strimbeck. Based upon a true story, the play follows Raja Englanderova’s experience as a young girl living in the Jewish ghetto of Terezin during the Holocaust. The play uses as inspiration the book I never saw another butterfly…Children’s Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp, 1942-1944, first published by Schocken Books in 1978.

More than 12,000 children passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between the years 1942-1944, and only about a hundred were still alive when Terezin was liberated. Raja lived through it all, teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little reason for hope. This play is her story, and although it is permeated with loss and anguish, it is also infused with love and hope. Journey with Raja as she experiences the best and the worst of which the human heart is capable.
