More Than 700 Students Have Toured Capital Region BOCES Career And Technical School

More than 700 area high school students have toured Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School campuses in early 2022.

Schools ranging from Schenectady and Shenendehowa to Cobleskill-Richmondville, Sharon Springs, Green Island and Cohoes have brought students to the campuses to observe, ask questions and try their hands at various skills.

There are more opportunities for those still interested, including a March 3 open house at the Career and Technical School, Albany Campus. The event runs from 6:30-8 p.m. Individual school districts, including Schenectady, South Colonie and Voorheesville, are also planning additional school day visits to the campuses during the coming weeks. Students interested in visiting should talk to their home school district counselor and visit https://www.capitalregionboces.org/visit-career-and-technical-ed/ for more information.
Prospective students who have already visited the campuses said they were amazed by the opportunities.

“I bake at home so when I saw the Culinary Arts program at BOCES it interested me. I can come here and learn a lot of new skills,” said Ollie Tankersley, a prospective student from Guilderland.

“I’ve always been around cars and small engines and recently I developed an interested in bigger engines because, well, they are bigger. I think coming here to learn how to work on them would be great,” added Adam Gathen, a prospective Diesel Tech student from Niskayuna.

Many of the prospective students will enroll and begin programs in the fall on the Schoharie and new, state-of-the-art Albany campus.

Duanesburg student Laura Thomason summed up all that a career and technical school is about.

“I have always been intrigued by crime scenes and how (police) solve them. Attending BOCES while I am still in high school and getting a head start in a career in (criminal investigation) just makes sense,” she said.
