June 8, 2021Mohonasen Seniors Hired by Albany Medical Center Because of Their Education at Capital Region BOCES
A pair of Capital Region BOCES seniors have been hired at Albany Medical Center to ensure the health and safety of patients.
Abigail Black and Carrera Meyer-Hill are seniors in the BOCES Sterile Processing Technician class taught at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen. They have been hired to work part-time at Albany Medical Center as sterile processing technicians while they pursue college educations in the medical field.
“It’s pretty cool that am I am in a job that is in the medical field and will help me improve my career options,” said Black, who attends the program from Mohonasen Central School District.
“This is a real world job that we were able to get directly as a result of a course we took in high school. That is pretty amazing,” added Meyer-Hill, who is also a Mohonasen student.
The Capital Region BOCES program prepares students for careers on the front lines in the war against germs and is essential in keeping health care environments safe for patients. Sterile processing technicians decontaminate, inspect, package and sterilize equipment and devices used in health care. These items can range from very complex medical devices to simple hand-held surgical instrumentation and are essential to patient care and successful patient outcomes.
As part of their learning, students spend class time each week at Albany Medical Center, learning how the hospital sterilizes medical equipment for procedures, as well as actually preparing some equipment under the watchful eye of hospital staff.
Teacher Jeff Landry, who also works at Albany Medical Center, said the students were hired not only because of their education, but also because of their diligence in learning.
“They show up every day, do their work and learn what they need to,” said teacher Jeff Landry.
Both students will be pursuing careers in medicine starting in the fall; Black is attending Hudson Valley Community College for a degree in nursing and Meyer-Hill is attending SUNY Schenectady County Community College in pursuit of a career as a surgical tech.
