miSci, the Broughton Charitable Foundation and SMARA conducted a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the recently-renovated Henry Primm Broughton Memorial Radio Room in miSci’s lower level. Through nearly $40,000 worth of funding from the Foundation, the Radio Room underwent numerous upgrades, including: structural renovations, improved lighting and soundproof paneling, installation of interpretive signage, and enhancements to the radio equipment – technology that made possible a recent contact with NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

The partners hope the facility will inspire students to pursue interests and careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) through amateur radio science. Its purpose is to introduce students to the technologies involved with international and space communications through exploration of amateur radio. The ceremony kicked off “Radio Days” activities hosted by SMARA.
