November 27, 2018miSci Announces Dynamic 3-Year Exhibition Schedule and Launch of New Traveling Exhibition Program
miSci announced an exciting new exhibition plan, including a dynamic three-year schedule of changing exhibitions at the museum and the launch of a traveling exhibition program. Led by miSci President and seasoned curator, Dr. Gina C. Gould, the museum’s new exhibition strategy will better serve its visitors and create a new revenue stream to support its operations and expansion.
For the next three years, miSci will present three major interactive STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) exhibitions, in addition to its annual butterfly house and model train display. The exhibition schedule is built around the seasonal nature of the museum’s visitorship, welcoming families during the Summer and school groups in the Spring and Fall; with our Fall exhibitions also speaking to adult audiences. Each year, two of the three exhibitions will be rented from national sources, and the third will be an internally-curated exhibit to premiere at miSci before becoming available for rental by other museums and science centers nationwide.
“miSci has a world-class unique collection of artifacts and imagery that chronicle the history of human innovation over the past 125 years,” says miSci President Dr. Gina C. Gould. “Through our new traveling exhibition program, we intend to celebrate and share Schenectady’s illustrious history of innovation at other museums across the country. Not only will Schenectady’s story be broadcast nationwide, but this business endeavor will also help the museum to support its operations while bringing an ever-changing exhibit program to the Capital Region. I am very excited by our dynamic three-year exhibit schedule, to premiere newly-curated exhibits here at miSci, and to launch miSci’s traveling exhibition program, and I look forward to working with engineers and scientists here in the Capital Region to make the science we present in our exhibitions addictively fun and inspiring.”
miSci’s new traveling exhibition program is designed to showcase Schenectady’s global story by combining the museum’s unique artifacts and archival materials with interactive storytelling about Schenectady’s heritage of technological innovation. Original exhibitions, such as Art and Science of Cooking and Communications Technology: Connecting the World will immerse visitors in stories about the evolution of cooking techniques, electronic and digital communication, breakthrough medical imaging and more.
Neil and Jane Golub have underwritten the first three years of development and launch of the museum’s internal – and subsequently traveling – exhibit program, which is designed so that each exhibit will generate annual revenue during up to ten years of travel.
“As longtime supporters of the museum, Jane and I are proud to support Dr. Gould’s new exhibition schedule and traveling exhibition program,” says miSci benefactor Neil Golub. “Her vision and stewardship of miSci’s collection and archive will not only serve to share Schenectady’s history with audiences across the nation but also enable the museum to become more self-sustaining. Jane and I believe strongly in miSci’s importance to the Capital Region, and we are excited to help the museum share globally-significant stories from right here in our community, while also supporting its strategy for continued growth and success.”
In 2019, miSci will be presenting Zoom Into Nano from Sciencecenter of Ithaca, Wolf to Woof: The Story of Dogs from Wonderworks Exhibits, and its own Art and Science of Cooking. 2020 will bring Weather to Climate: Our Changing World from Flying Fish Exhibits, Design Zone from OMSI, and miSci’s Communications Technology: Connecting the World. Slated for 2021 are Be The Astronaut from Eureka Exhibits, Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear from California Science Center, and miSci’s The Science of Imaging: How MRIs & CT Scans Changed Medicine.
