Member Spotlight: The Pine Hollow Arboretum

The Pine Hollow Arboretum is a member supported, 25-acre public arboretum located in the Historic Hamlet of Slingerlands.

The Pine Hollow Arboretum’s mission is to preserve, manage and enhance native and introduced species of trees, shrubs and other plants in a natural environment. Pine Hollow’s horticultural collection, or “living library”, consists of over 3,600 unique trees, shrubs and other woody plants from around the world. This living collection is aesthetically arranged in a beautiful setting that includes 11 ponds and an Eastern White Pine forest. A network of trails and bridges throughout the preserve allow visitors of all ages to enjoy the grounds and connect with nature for free, 365 days a year.

Each year, The Pine Hollow Arboretum provides hands-on environmental education to over 500 elementary and high school students. The goal of this programming is to impact a diverse audience to provide meaningful opportunities for students to experience hands-on learning in a natural environment. The Pine Hollow Arboretum aims to shape the next generation of environmental stewards, educators and leaders.

Lauren Axford, the Arboretum’s first executive director, has been thoroughly enjoying all the events and networking opportunities the Capital Region Chamber has to offer. Before settling in the area, Lauren worked for the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s Natural Resources Group as a horticulturalist specializing in native plant production for large-scale restoration projects within New York City. She is so pleased to be able to share her love of the Capital Region’s “hidden gem” (aka The Pine Hollow Arboretum) and is always happy to provide other Chamber members with a private tour.

To raise funds to support the Arboretum’s education programming, on-site maintenance and renovation of its new headquarters, Pine Hollow will be holding its first Winter Gala at the Spinney at Van Dyke on Thursday January 24th 2019 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. For event info, visit: Pine Hollow Arboretum Winter Gala at the Spinney at Van Dyke
