Member Spotlight: Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York

Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York prepares more than 9,000 girls across 15 counties in northeastern New York for a lifetime of leadership, success, and adventure in a safe, no-limits place designed for and by girls.

With help from 3,000 volunteers, girls participate in challenging and fun activities like earning badges, exploring science, getting outdoors, selling cookies, and doing community service projects. Along the way, girls gain important skills in areas such as science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); outdoor exploration; leadership; and entrepreneurship.

Empowering girls in our community to pursue their dreams and goals is critical to the success of the Greater Capital Region. Teaching girls – through real world lessons — to be adventurous and step outside of their comfort zones and to have the confidence to fail helps girls become the next generation’s engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, welders, doctors, carpenters and business leaders.

Girl Scouts has a long legacy of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place, including addressing current problems and challenges. Our Gold Award Girl Scouts have initiated programs that continue to contribute to improve their communities. This past year, one of our Gold Award Girl Scouts was recognized nationally. Her work creating solar pollinator gardens in her community to attract bees that are essential to agriculture in New York State, secured state funding to study expanding this program state-wide.

Many of these real-world lessons are taught each summer in our Girl Scout camps located throughout northeastern New York. Through a variety of skill-building programs such as camping, exploring aquatic life, archery, viewing the stars, swimming, and hiking, girls discover their passions, build healthy relationships, and overcome challenges. In an all-girl setting, camp is her first opportunity to encounter true independence and be herself.

In the coming years, Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York is modernizing and revitalizing camp facilities, enhancing programming, and building a Leadership Center for Girls, a state-of-the-art community facility dedicated to providing STEM programming and leadership development.
