Member Spotlight: Applied Robotics

Tim and Mark with the new bag gripper

Perhaps you are one of the people who wonder what goes on in that odd building next to Fogg’s Automotive. Well, we are an office much like yours. We have the usual departments like accounting, IT, sales, marketing, administration, and customer service. Then as a manufacturer, we also have purchasing, production, incoming and outgoing quality control, assembly, a machine shop, shipping, and receiving. Also, as an engineering-based company, we have engineering and technical support. But, what do we do? Our name implies that we have something to do with Robotics. Indeed, we do. We don’t make robots nor are we robots. We make the tools the robot needs to get things done. If you think of a robot as an arm, we make the hands and the means in which those hands attach to the robot.

We make tool changers which are (in the most tech free words) snaps. There is an active side (the robot side) and a passive side (the tool side) and they go on the wrist of the robot and connect and disconnect (snap) the tool from the robot. Passing through the tool changer are all the items the robot needs to do its job like, air, water, coolant, other fluids, high power electricity for welding, power and anything else like bolts or paint. We also make grippers and collision sensors which are items that prevent costly damage to those robot tools at the end of the tool changer. They send a signal back to the robot at the start of a collision to have the robot stop the collision and avoid damage.

That is what we do. Who are we?

We are;

• 36 proud parents to human or furry kids
• we are new dads
• we are grandmas and grandpas
• we are scuba divers
• we are crafters
• we are music fans
• we are master grillers
• we are motorcycle enthusiasts
• we are lovers of the outdoors
• we are motorheads
• we are 40 Under 40 go getters

We are fellow Chamber members and glad to be part of this amazing Tech Valley area. So, the next time you go by us on Route 50 please wave or sign up for a tour on Manufacturing Day, and if anyone ever wonders, “what the heck do they do in there?” you can tell them that it is Applied Robotics – the place where the robot revolution thrives.
