Member Spotlight: Academy of the Holy Names

The Academy of the Holy Names was established in 1884 and offers a student-centered education for girls in grades 6–12, delivered with expertise and a passion for inspiring students to become active leaders in service to others. The school is part of an international network of schools sponsored by Holy Names Educational Ministries. Looking ahead, the Academy’s future goals include sharing its story with a broader audience, ensuring long-term financial sustainability, expanding academic programming and the student experience, and continuing to build upon its mission and values through its Strategic Plan.

An interesting fact about the Academy is that approximately 10 faculty and staff members are alumnae of the school. Another unique aspect of Holy Names is its mascot, the Panthers, represented by Penny the Panther, which was introduced during the 2020s after students voted on the name. The Academy also dedicates an annual Day of Service where every employee and student volunteers with organizations throughout the Capital Region, demonstrating the school community’s dedication to serving the marginalized, poor, and disadvantaged.

Academy of the Holy Names is known as the Capital Region’s only all-girls, private, independent Catholic school. Its single-gender model encourages open dialogue, collaboration, and focus in subjects that may traditionally be underrepresented for women, allowing students to be themselves as they prepare for future leadership roles. The Academy values being part of the Capital Region community and appreciates the role families and community members play in helping the area continue to grow and thrive. As a Chamber member, the school has utilized job posting resources and values the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the region long after students leave its halls. One of the most meaningful compliments the school receives is hearing that a Holy Names education changed a student’s or daughter’s life and set them on a path toward future success.
