Marshall & Sterling Insurance – Leeds/Saratoga Springs Recognized as Data Privacy Day Champion for Third Straight Year

Ken Grey of Marshall & Sterling Insurance – Leeds/Saratoga Springs announced today that for the third straight year his branch offices have been recognized as a Champion of Data Privacy Day (DPD) by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA.) As a DPD Champion, Marshall & Sterling Leeds/Saratoga Springs supports the principle that organizations, businesses and government all share the responsibility of being conscientious stewards of personal information by respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.

Data Privacy Day, observed annually on January 28, is an international awareness effort to encourage Internet users to consider the privacy implications of their online actions and motivate all companies to make privacy and data protection a greater priority. Marshall & Sterling Insurance – Leeds/Saratoga Springs joins the growing effort among organizations, corporations, educational institutions, government entities and municipalities globally to raise awareness and educate consumers about how their personal information may be collected, the benefits and risks of sharing personal information as well as the nature and scope of online data usage. Through collaborative efforts and unified, consistent messaging about data privacy, all DPD Champions will work toward the goal of improving consumer consciousness and empowering everyone to safeguard their privacy.

Lorraine Emerick, Vice President at Marshall & Sterling Leeds/Saratoga Springs, has been an advocate of protecting data and educating organizations and consumers of their exposure and how to best safeguard information.  Lorraine has developed their online Cyber Center and regularly contributes educational content – http://www.marshallsterling.com/leeds-cybercenter.  “With the increased use of technology to process and disseminate data, protection of identifiable information is critical to maintain public trust and confidence in an organization, to protect the reputation of an organization and to protect against legal liability.  Unfortunately, many organizations mistakenly believe their traditional insurance policies cover them for all privacy/security liability exposures and notification expenses – these unexpected costs can be financially devastating. There are both legal and ethical obligations to inform your customers and the public that their information is at risk – in accordance with laws varying by state as well as federal regulations”, stated Ms. Emerick.

Spearheaded by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008 as an extension of the Data Protection Day recognition in Europe. The day, January 28, commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty addressing privacy and data protection.
