Local Teen Seeks State Leadership Post

Aiden Enders of Duanesburg is one of five high school students from across New York State vying to be president of the New York State SkillsUSA organization.

The Capital Region BOCES Diesel Tech junior – who is president of the Albany Career and Technical School SkillsUSA chapter – will be in Syracuse from April 24-26 for the several-thousand-student organization’s annual competition and state election.

“I loved doing it at the local level and the work of the current (state) president has really impressed me and I decided I want to be up there like him leading from the front,” said Enders.

SkillsUSA is a local, state and national organization devoted to empowering its high school and college student members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens while also ensuring that America has a skilled workforce.

The mild-mannered teen said that “SkillsUSA is a great organization and is addressing major issues we face in this country.”

“I am interested in traveling the country and going all over with Skills, meeting new people in all of the industries and helping to advance the goals of the organization,” Enders said.

As to his future outside of high school, Enders, a volunteer firefighter, said he is debating between going to college to expand his knowledge of diesel technology or going to college to become a professional firefighter/paramedic.

“I like all the diagnostics, trying to solve a problem, and I like the hands on work – you are always up and moving and working, you aren’t just sitting down,” he said of his draw to a career in a diesel shop.
