Local Hardware Retailer Expands in the New York Capital Region

The Grasso trio of Hatchet Hardware is adding another location in the Capital Region. Angelo, Giovanni, and Erika Grasso announced that they would be opening the doors of the former Morgan Stanley building at 1448 Balltown Rd. in Niskayuna in December of 2020 as their fifth Hatchet Hardware location.

The Grasso’s hope to further their bonds in the area while creating new ones. The family-owned and operated Hatchet Hardware has many friends, loyal customers, and creators they work with within Schenectady County, so it “felt right to open a shop in Niskayuna,” says Erika Grasso, Senior Manager and Creative Director for Hatchet Hardware. “We always say the best part about opening a shop is becoming a part of a new community. With our last opening, we were able to explore a different area of New York, and with this location, we will be able to become a part of a community we already know and love. I’m excited about this location. The neighborhood is great, and it’s amazing to be close to some businesses that we love like the local daycare and the Niskayuna Co-op.”

Angelo and Giovanni have worked in the hardware business for over 30 years, starting in their father’s, Angelo Grasso Sr’s, shop in Brooklyn, NY. The Grasso brothers and Erika opened their first store in Brunswick, NY, in 2014 and have been expanding in the Capital Region since. In 2016 they purchased Pfeil Hardware in Downtown Troy, NY, then acquired Philips Hardware in Waterford, NY, in 2019. The Grasso trio also purchased Dutchtown Ace Hardware in Palatine Bridge, NY, in June of this year.

Last week, the team poured cement floors in their new 9,000 sq. ft. Niskayuna location and have started Electrical work in hopes of beginning shelving and stocking goods by mid-November. As an authorized Ace Hardware dealer, the family intends to keep up the tradition of their unique hardware stores by bringing in a home goods section curated by Erika Grasso and Taylor Clement – the buyer and merchandiser of Hatchet Hardware. They also plan to bring in a propane filling station and brands like Benjamin Moore and STIHL. As an environmentally conscious business, the family hopes to install six EV charging ports, build a greenhouse, and bring many sustainable and eco-friendly products to this location.

For the health and safety of their teams and communities the family has pushed back any grand opening events at Hatchet Hardware locations. Like many, the trio hopes that 2021 brings more time for celebration.
