Lafarge Ravena Cement Plant Hosts First Responders Tour

The Lafarge Ravena cement plant recently hosted a tour of its state-of-the-art facility for local first responders as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen ties to the community and facilitate improved safety for workers, vendors, customers, visitors, and area residents alike.

Representatives from four local agencies – the Coeymans Hollow Fire Department, the Coeymans Volunteer Fire Co. # 1, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coeymans Building Department – participated in the three-hour tour held Friday, Nov. 12, 2021.

The tour was led by plant manager Dave MacLauchlin and Aaron Kelsey, the plant’s area Environmental and Public Affairs manager. Tour stops included the control room and a trip to the top of the pre-heater tower, from which participants were able to view much of the 3,200-acre site – including the quarry and waterfront as well as multiple methods of entering and existing in the event of an emergency.

“Safety is our top priority, and it was particularly important for us to host our local first responders as many of them have not been on site since the 2017 completion of a significant modernization project,” MacLauchlin said. “It’s critical that anyone who might be called to the plant have the most up-to-date information about its layout so they can address any problems that might arise as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

MacLauchlin and Kelsey thanked the first responders for their time and service to the community, and all agreed to an ongoing dialogue in the coming months to identify areas of shared interest and potential collaboration.
