Jan 31: Tu B’Shevat Fair and Tree Art Contest at Schenectady JCC

In honor of Tu B’Shevat, Schenectady JCC is hosting a community fair on Wednesday, January 31, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm at the Robert and Dorothy Ludwig Schenectady JCC on the Golub Family Campus at 2565 Balltown Road, Niskayuna.

Tu B’Shevat is also known as the new year or birthday for trees and is used to calculate the age of trees.  In the Torah, it states that fruit from trees may not be eaten during the first four years of a tree’s life.  Every tree is considered to have aged one year as of Tu B’Shevat.

The fair will include different activity stations including: planting seeds, making bird feeders, games, arts and crafts, fruit tasting and cupcake decorating.

Participants for the Tree Art Contest can use their imagination to build a tree sculpture or 3D picture of a tree. Any materials may be used.  One winner in each category (Kids, Teens, Adults) will be selected; winning trees will be on display throughout the month of February. Entries must be received submitted by Monday, January 29.
