Israeli Women’s Community Theater Presents “La Casa de Bernarda Alba” at Schenectady JCC

The Israeli Women’s Community Theater will present “La casa de Bernarda Alba” at Schenectady JCC, on the Golub Family Campus is located at 2565 Balltown Road in Niskayuna on Saturday, December 10 at 7:30 pm.  The performance is free and the content is suitable for attendees, 14 years and older.

La casa de Bernarda Alba (The House of Bernarda Alba) was written by Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca in 1936 and centers on the Andalusian home of domineering matriarch Bernarda Alba after the death of her second husband.  During this period of mourning, Alba wields total control over her five daughters and prohibits them from any form of romantic relationship. Feeling even further isolation, tensions mount for the female players.

“Lorca’s themes — repression, passion, and conformity — are universal, all people and cultures can relate to them,” said Judy Ben-Ami, Jewish Cultural & Adult Programming Director at the Schenectady JCC. “The play will be presented in Hebrew, and subtitles will be screened in English for those who are not proficient in the language.”

The Israeli Women’s Community Theater is a group of women from throughout the Capital District who come together at the Schenectady JCC to rehearse every week. The performance on Saturday is directed by troupe member Liat Yasharzade.

La casa de Bernarda Alba is presented in partnership with Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York.  Refreshments will be served.
