July 25, 2018Hudson Valley Community College Announces New Trustee Thomas Grant and Re-appointment of Trustee William Fagan
Thomas P. Grant of East Greenbush, a first-term member of the Rensselaer County Legislature, was appointed on July 10 to the Hudson Valley Community College Board of Trustees. William F. Fagan, a member of the college’s Class of 1973 and president of Wm. J. Fagan and Sons, Inc., in downtown Troy was reappointed to a second term in May.
Approved as a college trustee by the Rensselaer County Legislature, Grant takes the board seat vacated by the Honorable Conrad H. Lang, Jr., a retired Rensselaer County Surrogate Court Judge, who stepped down in June. During his two terms of service, Judge Lang served as Vice Chairman (2003-2011) and Chairman (2011-2015). He was named Trustee Emeritus at the board’s June meeting.
Prior to being elected as a County Legislator, Grant was an East Greenbush Town Councilman, mediator and Certified Correctional Auditor for the American Correctional Association. He is a retired New York State Parole Board Commissioner and former Legislative Director for the New York State Senate. He holds degrees from SUNY Plattsburgh (B.A.) and the University at Albany (M.A.).
Reappointed by New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Fagan was first appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2009 by former Governor David Patterson. He was a member of the college’s Foundation Board of Directors from 1994 to 2015, including service as vice president and president from 1997 to 2007. He was named Foundation Board Director Emeritus in January 2018. He also has been a member of the college’s Faculty Student Association Board of Directors since 2010. Fagan earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University. Wm. J. Fagan and Sons, Inc. was founded by Fagan’s grandfather more than 100 years ago.
The college’s 10-member Board of Trustees is appointed by the Governor, who names four members, and the Rensselaer County Legislature, which names five members to serve seven-year terms. One member is elected by the student body for a one-year term. Trustee terms for Grant, appointed by the County Legislature, and Fagan expire in 2025 and 2023, respectively.
