April 13, 2016Hometown Health Centers Helping to Bring Nutritious Food to Schenectady Residents
Local residents unable to grow their own fruits and vegetables or easily make it to a supermarket can still be assured of obtaining the freshest produce, thanks to a new partnership between Hometown Health Centers (HHC) and Troy-based Capital Roots.
Beginning Monday, April 11, local residents will be able to climb aboard Capital Roots’ “Veggie Mobile” every Monday from 2-2:45 p.m. The mobile market delivers a variety of fresh, affordable and local produce to inner-city neighborhoods throughout Schenectady, Albany and Rensselaer and counties. Produce ranges from bananas and carrots to tomatoes and apples.
“We’re trying to be a good neighbor,” said Joe Gambino, CEO, Hometown Health Centers, a nationally recognized primary care and dental practice located at 1044 State Street, Schenectady, NY. “Schenectady residents deserve access to good nutrition and we are excited to have launched this partnership to bring fresh, affordable food to members of the community.”
The Veggie Mobile will be parked in HHC’s parking lot. The following payment types are accepted: cash, check, EBT, Veggie Rx, Farmers Market Nutrition Program Checks (July through November), and Capital Roots-sponsored certificates.
Built in 2007 with a $500,000 grant from the New York State Department of Health, the Veggie Mobile is equipped with solar panels, which operate refrigerators and a sound system. Produce, which is sold at wholesale prices, is purchased directly from farmers or from the Menands Market. The Veggie Mobile operates 50 weeks per year.
