September 12, 2019Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region to Host Annual Hero Walk and Run for Autism on September 21
The Autism Society of the Greater Capital Region will host the annual Hero Walk and Run for Autism, their biggest fundraising event of the year, at Schenectady Central Park on September 21. The Hero Walk provides the local community a day to celebrate children and adults on the autism spectrum, their families and loved ones, and supportive professionals.
“We added the superhero theme to the walk to celebrate the everyday heroes in our community,” says Janine Kruiswijk, executive director of the organization. “From first responders and educators to dedicated support professionals and family members, we want to honor the heroic efforts of those who help our autism community have greater access to support and opportunities.”
Attendees often wear creative superhero costumes, ranging from classics like Batman and Superman, to video game heroes such as Link from the “Legend of Zelda” series. Many families and businesses create teams and design custom matching shirts. This year, the Hero Walk will include contests for best costume and best team shirt.
While the community walk is free for all to participate, attendees have the option to pay to register for the timed run. Superhero capes for children and adults, provided by local costume shop The Costumer, are available to purchase with advanced walk registration. The event also includes exhibitor tables, raffles, and food vendors.
“The Hero Walk is our primary source of income,” says Kruiswijk. “We use these donations to provide critical services to individuals with autism and their families, and run programs that enrich our community. The funds raised here, stay here!”
The Annual Hero Walk & Run for Autism will be held on Saturday, September 21 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Schenectady Central Park.
