April 17, 2019God of Carnage Opens May 3 at Schenectady Civic Players
The fifth play of Schenectady Civic Players’ 91st Season, God of Carnage, a comedy by Yasmina Reza (translated by Christopher Hampton) and directed by Joseph Fava, opens Friday, May 3, and plays through Sunday, May 12 at its 12 South Church Street Playhouse in Schenectady’s historic Stockade district.
It replaces Ballroom, originally scheduled for that slot, which was dropped from fifth position due to circumstances beyond Civic Players’ control.
Winner of the 2009 Tony Awards for Best Play, God of Carnage is a brash and hilarious exploration of human nature. The original Broadway production starring Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden, closed on June 6, 2010, after 24 previews and 452 regular performances, making it the third-longest running play of the 2000s.
God of Carnage presents an evening in the lives of two couples, residents of a tony Brooklyn neighborhood, who meet to civilly discuss a playground incident between their two eleven-old-boys. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the evening progresses the polite veneer breaks down. “Ms. Reza’s streamlined anatomy of the human animal incites the kind of laughter that comes from the gut, as involuntary as hiccups or belching.” – NY Times
The cast features Cristine M. Loffredo (as Veronica Novak), Knathan MacKenzie-Roy (as Alan Raleigh), Marty O’Connor (as Michael Novak) and J.J. Paul (as Annette Raleigh).
God of Carnage runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (May 3, 4, 5) and May 8 through 12. Friday and Saturday curtains are at 8 pm. Wednesday and Thursday curtains are at 7:30 pm., and Sundays are matinees only at 2:30 pm.
