Flagg Powers Saints Past Bobcats

Briana Flagg wrapped up a career weekend with 20 kills and 14 digs, helping Siena fight past stubborn Quinnipiac 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-19) Sunday in the ARC. Haley Howell dished out 46 assists, and Kalehua Katagiri posted a match-high 18 digs in the victory.

Siena stormed out to a 14-3 lead in the first set and rolled home to a 25-12 victory, but the rest of the day would prove more challenging.

The Bobcats bounced back to claim a 25-19 victory in the second set, evening the match at intermission. The Saints trailed 12-9 in the third set before using a tide-turning 6-1 run to pull in front, and then Flagg served Siena to four straight points late to seal a 25-18 win. The decisive fourth set was tied at 11-11 before Erin Bies, Kiara Pierre and Howell keyed a 5-2 run and Siena never trailed again.

Bies had another fine match with 11 digs.

Flagg posted her seventh double-double, and second 20-kill match of her career. The other came Saturday, when she finished 21 kills in a tight four-set loss to Fairfield.

Siena hit .517 (18-3-29) in its dominant first set win, and .208 for the match. The Saints controlled kills (57-37), digs (63-48), aces (10-3) and hitting percentage (.208-.123). Quinnipiac had a 10-3 edge in blocks, and although no player reached double figures in kills, five had at least five.

Christina Monroe gave the Saints the balance they need in the middle, finishing 10 of 19 swings without an error (.526). Darby Taylor bounced back to post six kills on the outside, and Sonja Vasovic completed a nice weekend with nine kills on the right side.

Siena and Marist meet in a rematch of last year’s MAAC Championship Saturday at 1 p.m. in the ARC.
