First New York Federal Credit Union Student-Run Branch to Open at Mohonasen High School

On Thursday, December 7, 2023, First New York Federal Credit Union will open a new student-run branch at Mohonasen High School. It will be called the Legacy Branch, a name selected by Mohonasen students.

Members of the media and dignitaries are invited to attend a grand opening event at Mohonasen HS on Thursday, December 7, at 10 AM.

Mohonasen is the third high school in the Capital Region to participate in First New York’s In-School Branch Program. The Patriot Branch at Schenectady HS is in its 19th year of operation, and the Spartan Branch at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake HS is in its second year.

“School banking through First New York Federal Credit Union supports students as they become financially literate which is an attribute of the Portrait of a Mohonasen Graduate,” said Laurel Logan-King, Mohonasen’s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

“We are thrilled to partner with First New York and re-establish what was once a highly successful, school-based bank branch,” said Craig Chandler, Principal of Mohonasen High School. “I know that the combination of the amazing crew from First New York and the enthusiasm of our staff and students, it will be a success.”

Through this invaluable experience, Mohonasen high school students will have a safe environment to volunteer as a Teller, transact, and earn rewards for their saving efforts. The Legacy Branch will be staffed by student volunteers who will provide banking services to their school district, staff, and colleagues. Functioning as Tellers, these student volunteers will gain hands on working experience while receiving opportunities to learn financial marketing and new account sales fundamentals. This experience will assist them in their higher education goals and future employment opportunities, and financial literacy.
