Erie Canal Bicentennial Kicks Off With New Exhibit, Local Initiatives

What: This year marks the start of a multi-year celebration of the Erie Canal. In 1817, ground was broken for the construction of the original Erie Canal. Across New York State, organizations will be celebrating the bicentennial of the beginning of this historic project that transformed New York and the nation.

On March 25, the Albany Institute of History & Art will open a new exhibition Spotlight: Erie Canal that includes materials from the museum’s collection that narrate a story of the original Erie Canal through the Barge Canal using paintings, drawings, maps, photographs, books, broadsides, silver, ceramics, and more. The exhibition will run through August 20, 2017.

This is just one of a series of initiatives related to the bicentennial. The Albany Institute of History & Art invites press to see the new exhibition and hear more about this exciting anniversary from participants such as:

  • New York State Canal Corporation
  • Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau
  • WMHT
  • Additional participants to be determined
