Employers, Prospective Employees, Meet at Capital Region BOCES

Dozens of Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School students met with potential employers in the automotive trades on May 22 during an annual automotive career fair. Employers ranging from DePaula Auto Group to Callanan Industries, Milton CAT and ARG Trucking were on hand to recruit students to full- and part-time jobs.

“The job market is beyond tight, I have had technician jobs open for six months and there’s nobody, nobody coming through the door and what does come through the door is just testing the waters, they don’t have any skills and are unqualified. At BOCES, we know we have kids with skills,” said Stanley Pollard of Penske Truck Rental.

With skilled labor in high demand, employers said BOCES and its program offer a fertile recruiting ground.

“A lot of the kids are coming to us knowing what they want, which is impressive among the younger population. It’s been a success this year,” said  Mike DeMartino, service manager for DePaula Auto Group.

The automotive career fair at Capital Region BOCES is an annual event and often results in more than a dozen students finding full- and part-time jobs, either while in school or upon graduation.

Students said the opportunity to find employment is an unexpected benefit of attending Capital Region BOCES.

“It’s exciting. I am a dishwasher right now and it’s OK, but to be able to come here and learn about job opportunities and have a chance to get a summer job in a field that I am interested in is amazing,” said Logan Berube, a diesel tech student from Mohonasen.

A senior looking for a full-time job upon his graduation was equally excited.

“I am hoping to get a full time job right out of high school. This was amazing, we got to meet with businesses that we didn’t even know were hiring. I am hopeful of hearing from them soon,” said Tameshwar Lalaram of Schenectady.
