Eighth-Grade Students, Families Invited to Capital Region P-TECH Information Events

A series of open houses will take place over the next two weeks for parents of middle school students to learn about the innovative Capital Region BOCES Pathways in Technology Early College High Schools (P-TECH).

Open houses will take place on Feb. 5 at the Watervliet Junior/Senior High School and Feb. 6 at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School – Schoharie Campus. Both events start at 6:30 p.m. Watervliet Junior/Senior High School is located at 1245 Hillside Dr, Watervliet, NY 12189 and the Schoharie Career and Technical School campus is located at 174 State Route 30A in Schoharie, NY 12157. Another open house will be conducted Feb. 13 at Schalmont Middle School, located at 2 Sabre Dr, Schenectady, NY 12306. That event also starts at 6:30 p.m.

The cutting-edge, four- to six-year P-TECH program (grades 9-12 and two years of college) prepares students for future careers in the field of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through hands-on, project based learning. Depending on their interests, students will study at one of two Capital Region sites beginning their freshman year and remain there for the duration of the program.

The P-TECH campuses at the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen and Watervliet Junior/High School offer a distinct pathway that leads to an associate’s degree from a neighboring college in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Cybersecurity.

Current students and business leaders alike praise the program.

I like P-TECH because it’s hands-on and I can focus better and learn more in a hands-on setting. I want to do game design for a career. Having the opportunity to learn computer technology like this in high school will help me and put me ahead of the game,” said Michael Martin, a freshman in the program from the Mohonasen Central School District.

“The nontraditional classroom setting, real-world curriculum and hands-on approach to learning is an experience the students will be able to carry with them throughout their entire lives & careers,” Dan Fruscio of CAPCOM said. “As a business partner within the community, we recognize that these students are our future and how important P-TECH is.”
