January 9, 2020Dr. Laurie Carbo-Porter Joins Maria College as Dean of Nursing
Maria College is pleased to announce that Laurie Carbo-Porter, Ph.D., RN, has joined the College as Dean of Nursing.
“We’re thrilled that Dr. Carbo-Porter is joining our team,” said Maria College President Thomas J. Gamble. “With her wealth of knowledge in both the clinical practice of nursing and an impressive academic background in nurse education, Dr. Carbo-Porter will bring her experience and vision to Maria’s best-in-class nursing program.”
Laurie Carbo-Porter has been a registered nurse for over 30 years and a nurse educator and higher education administrator for over 20 years. Prior to joining Maria College, Dr. Carbo-Porter served in a variety of leadership roles within higher education, most recently at Excelsior College in the roles of Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, Dean of Health Sciences, Associate Dean of Health Sciences, and Associate Dean of Regulatory and Governmental Affairs, and at SUNY Empire State College as the Associate Dean for Nursing and Associate Professor.
During her nursing career she has worked in a variety of healthcare settings and roles, including a college health service director, homecare nurse, wound, ostomy and continence consultant, community health improvement coordinator, and medical/surgical nurse. Her areas of expertise are nursing education, competency-based education, clinical performance assessment, population health, and health assessment. Her areas of research have focused on adults in nontraditional learning environments and assessment and measurement of clinical competence. Some of her work is published in the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing and the Journal of Measurement in Nursing.
Dr. Carbo-Porter earned a PhD in Educational Psychology and Methodology from the University at Albany, State University of New York; a Master of Science in Nursing degree from The Sage Colleges; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the State University of New York College of Technology; and a Diploma in Nursing from Albany Medical Center School of Nursing.
