October 9, 2018Donate to Support Albany Fire Families
United Way of the Greater Capital Region, in partnership with CROAD, is accepting donations to support the families impacted by the two fires on Sheridan & Quail Street early morning on Sunday, September 30th.
Short-term relief is being provided by the American Red Cross. This assistance is in the area of food, safe shelter, clothing and medical care.
Catholic Charities will be providing long-term disaster case management for the survivors to help people rebuild their lives with other community-based organizations contributing to the needs of survivors as they become apparent.
100% of the funds raised by United Way/CROAD will go to the fire survivors, including for mid-term and long-term recovery. United Way of the Greater Capital Region will provide fiscal oversight. These funds can provide critical needs for impacted families such as on-going shelter, rental assistance and funds to purchase items such as food, furniture, clothing and household goods that were indentified by the fire survivors as part of their recovery plan.
RESIDENTS CAN CONNECT TO RESOURCES THROUGH 2-1-1
Families who were impacted by the fires on Quail Street and Sheridan Avenue should call 2-1-1 if they have not reached out already or been connected with assistance. All assistance requests should go through 211, which will be available 24/7.
Call 2-1-1 is a 24 hour/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year health and human services referral line. Individuals can dial 2-1-1 on your phone and trained specialists can assist callers in a variety of areas/need. Services can also be searched on-line www.211neny.org.
CROAD (CAPITAL REGION ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVE IN DISASTER)
In January 2018 the United Way of the Greater Capital Region partnered with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany, Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), American Red Cross, NYS Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services (DHSES), NYS Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NYSVOAD), and numerous other local organizations to launch the Capital Region Organizations Active in Disaster (CROAD). The goal of this network is to work alongside our local emergency managers and create a regional coordinated long term recovery plan to guide the efforts of the health and human service sector in the event of a disaster.
