Daily Gazette Acquires Amsterdam Recorder and Two Weekly Newspapers

The Daily Gazette is pleased to announce that it will be acquiring the Amsterdam Recorder, along with two of its weekly newspapers — the Courier-Standard-Enterprise and Fulton County Express.

The newspaper acquisitions are part of The Daily Gazette’s ongoing effort to make smart investments in news publications, its people, and cutting-edge technology to expand its print and digital platforms while remaining true to its mission, which is to support the local community with the highest quality journalism and journalistic products possible.

“First and foremost, the acquisition of the Amsterdam Recorder and the two weekly newspapers means the residents of Amsterdam and the surrounding areas will continue to have access to their hometown newspapers with local reporters covering local news,” said The Daily Gazette publisher, John DeAugustine.

The Gazette has been responsible for printing and distributing the Amsterdam Recorder and the two weeklies since 2016, but now they will be fully supported by the Gazette’s robust journalistic and advertising resources while remaining independent newspapers.

“As The Daily Gazette celebrates its 125th anniversary, it gives us great pride knowing we are not just preserving local newspapers for future generations, but that we have a plan to drive growth and ultimately bring even greater journalistic products and value to the people and markets served by these publications,” said board chairwoman, Elizabeth “Betsie” Hume Lind.

The acquisition will allow the Gazette to significantly enhance each publication’s offerings by leveraging even more of its resources, such as advertising services, the latest in media technology, and content assets.  In addition, it will create an opportunity for growth by eliminating certain fixed costs and allowing each publication to offer broader market opportunities and greater resources to its advertising customers.

“The Daily Gazette has become a one-stop-shop media company with a deep bench of seasoned and talented people all striving for journalistic excellence.  The acquisition means we are growing, and not just for the sake of growing, we are growing so that we can bring greater value to our readers and our advertising customers,” said DeAugustine.

DeAugustine will be named publisher of the Amsterdam Recorder, Courier-Standard-Enterprise and Fulton County Express.  Local reporters and sales executives at the three publications will continue to be responsible for editorial content and advertising.

The Daily Gazette has made a number of investments over the last year as it continues to grow and diversify the company.  Earlier this year the Gazette announced the opening of Image360, a new full service sign and graphics company owned by the Gazette and based in The Daily Gazette building.  Image360 is part of the Alliance Franchise Brands with locations all across the United States.  The Gazette also owns an events business, which plans and hosts high quality lifestyle events including weddings, signature community events, and events for people 50 and older.

Finally, the Gazette has been successful in attracting business tenants to its building, which has become a new commercial hub in the City of Schenectady.  The Gazette building is currently home to Logical Net, Livingston Energy, RM Logistics, Image360 Schenectady, and Edison Tech Center.
