Crowne Plaza Albany – The Desmond Hotel Celebrates 50 Years

The Capital Region Chamber was thrilled to join in the celebration of Crowne Plaza Albany – The Desmond Hotel 50 year anniversary.

We were joined by speakers Peter Crummey Colonie Town Supervisor, Daniel McCoy – Albany County Executive, Senator Jake Ashby, Adam DeLange-Head of Crowne Plaza Americas, Mark Eagan CEO of the Capital Region Chamber and Mike Chain Sr., Delta Holdings and Tyler Desmond, General Manager.

“January 3, 1974 the hotel doors officially opened as “The Americana Inn” and our landmark hotel’s legacy began. The hotel was originally a joint venture between John K. Desmond, Jr. and American Airlines as part of their “Americana” hotels division. The partnership was short lived, as American decided to leave the hotel industry soon after to focus on the airline side only. In 1986 the hotel became the “Desmond Americana” and through various rebrandings, updates and renovations over the years – it has remained one of a few independently owned and operated hotels in the Capital Region, currently managed by the third generation of the Desmond family – General Manager Tyler Desmond. Read the full history of the property here and we thank you for choosing our family and hotel over the last 50 years.”
